Jane Friedman. Industry expert and former publisher of Writer's Digest.

Industry expert and former publisher of Writer's Digest will be joining us in person to share her insights into our ever-changing industry, enlighten us about emerging tools and technologies, and tell us her vision for the future.

During the first hour, Jane will discuss self-publishing vs. traditional publishing with a focus on:
  • Why authors end up choosing self-publishing, as well as why authors leave self-publishing to sign with a traditional press
  • How publishers will need to change to continue attracting authors in the future
  • What authors need most that publishers can provide
  • How the author-publisher partnership can be improved and lead to better sales for everyone
During the second hour, Jane will talk about publishing trends and issues related to:
  • The growing importance of metadata and algorithms in book marketing
  • The power and presence of Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook
  • The range of tools, software, and websites that help distribute and market titles digitally
  • The categories/genres that are moving to digital more quickly, plus the growing percentage of sales happening online (regardless of format)
  • The changing game of information-based nonfiction publishing
Jane's presentation will conclude with a Q&A.
